Friday's Dubai Duty Free Full of Surprises British EBF Fillies' Conditions S. at Newbury was a tale of two Frankels and the momentum swung to the Stoute-trained Melnikova (GB) before the off, leaving Quadrilateral (GB) to trade as the 7-4 second favourite. As it turned out, the pair of debut winners who had proven hard to split in the betting were poles apart at the line as Quadrilateral turned this often-informative contest into a procession to score by nine lengths.

Back in 2002, Roger Charlton introduced L'Ancresse (Ire) (Darshaan {GB}) in this and was rewarded with a 2 1/2-length success from the future G1 Irish Oaks and GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf runner-up. Based on this high-class performance, the stable will be disappointed if Quadrilateral does not make it to similar heights and there was a general running for cover among the bookmakers who make her the favourite for the 2020 G1 1000 Guineas.

Having got up late on to take her novice over this course and distance Aug. 16, the imposing bay was ridden with patience again with Jason Watson happy to give the leader Melnikova a four-length advantage from the outset. Always travelling strongly despite bringing up the rear, she arrived on the front end with real menace 1 1/2 furlongs out and powered clear of that Cheveley Park Stud blueblood and James Oldham's Kalsara (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}). It was the latter who won out in their battle for second by a short head, but all eyes were on the latest Juddmonte sensation eating up the ground way ahead. Her winning time also stacked up favourably with the card's listed winner Tabarrak (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}).

Charlton, who also won this 12 months ago with Fashion's Star (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}), said, “You don't often see them win by nine lengths. I hoped she would win, but I didn't know how good the Sir Michael Stoute filly was. Her work has been good and she has matured a lot mentally. I thought she behaved fantastically today. She settled in behind, moved up and then quickened, she did everything right. When she came here and won first time, she did it on her ability because she wasn't fully fit so we knew there was better to come.”

Of immediate targets, he added, “I would have thought she ought to run again, because it is important to get black-type, you never know what happens next year. She is in the [Oct. 6 G1 Prix] Marcel Boussac [at ParisLongchamp], she is in the [G2] Rockfel, but that will be too soon. She is not in the [G1] Fillies; Mile [at Newmarket Oct. 11], but she could be.”

Quadrilateral is out of Nimble Thimble (Mizzen Mast), a former Charlton trainee who was a maiden winner over an extended nine furlongs at Wolverhampton and whose 3-year-old colt Boardman (GB) (Kingman {GB}) was recently third in the Listed Prix de Saint-Patrick. She is a half-sister to the G3 Coventry S. and GII Del Mar Breeders' Cup-winning sireThree Valleys (Diesis {GB}) who was one of this stable's past luminaries and whose eight-length success in the Royal Ascot juvenile feature will live long in the memory. She is also a half to the dam of Australian stakes-winning sons of Redoute's Choice (Aus) in Scissor Kick (Aus) and Sharkbite (Aus).

The third dam Kerali (GB) (High Line {GB}) graced the Juddmonte empire with the broodmare of solid gold Hasili (Ire) (Kahyasi {Ire}). Interestingly, Frankel has been employed for three of her daughters with positive results in both cases. Heat Haze (GB) (Green Desert), whose career highlights came when winning the GI Beverly D. S. and GI Matriarch S., produced the G3 Glorious S. scorer Mirage Dancer (GB) while the unraced pair of Very Good News (Empire Maker) and Responsible (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) are the dams of last year's G1 Irish St Leger third Weekender (GB) and this year's G2 Prix de Sandringham scorer and G1 Prix Rothschild third Obligate (GB), respectively.

Skiable's listed-winning half-sister Arrive (GB) (Kahyasi {Ire}) was responsible for another two of the operation's classier fillies in the G1 Pretty Polly S. heroine Promising Lead (GB) (Danehill) and Visit (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) who took the G3 Oak Tree S. and G3 Princess Margaret S. and was placed in the G1 Sun Chariot S., GI Gamely S., GI Yellow Ribbon S., GI Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf and GI Matriarch S.

And that is not all. Another of Kerali's daughters, Kid Gloves (GB) (In the Wings {GB}), is the dam of Treat Gently (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}) who took the G2 Prix de Malleret and GII Sheepshead Bay S. Nimble Thimble's yearling filly is a full-sister to Quadrilateral (GB), while she also has a colt foal by Kingman (GB).
