Overlooked at 13-1 in this career bow despite displaying an upbeat worktab over this strip, Unexplained proved to be one to watch with an impressive last-to-first victory beneath the Twin Spires. Off a bit slow, the dark bay trailed the field by about 10 lengths through early splits of :22.83 and :45.93. Gaining ground but still last turning for home, the Midwest Thoroughbreds runner found another gear as he was swung out to the center of the track by Florent Geroux in the lane. Unleashing an explosive late turn of foot, Unexplained inhaled his rivals in a matter of strides and charged home a four-length winner over Missle Bomb (Tale of the Cat) before galloping out well clear of the field. The winner is the only foal out of Alex’s Ali, who is a daughter of GSW Broad Dynamite. Midwest Thoroughbreds, who purchased Unexplained for $50,000 at last year’s Keeneland September sale, is also the owner and breeder of champion Work All Week (City Zip) and GI Arlington Million winner The Pizza Man (English Channel), who finished fifth in Saturday’s GI Breeders’ Cup Turf. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $33,000. Click for the Equibase.com chart, the free Equineline.com catalogue-style pedigree or VIDEO, sponsored by Fasig-Tipton.
