Unique Bella, a $400,000 KEESEP yearling purchase, was second after a sluggish start as the heavy favorite in her June 23 debut going five furlongs at Santa Anita. With a string of four straight bullet works in Arcadia under her belt, the gray filly was sent off the 3-5 favorite in this second outing. Away alertly this time, Unique Bella quickly took command and was loose on the lead through fractions of :22.49 and :45.40. She had a six-length advantage at the top of the stretch and continued to pull away under a motionless Mike Smith to win by 10 1/4 lengths. Mannerly (Unbridled’s Song) was a distant second. Unique Bella is the first foal to race out of 2010 GI Breeders’ Cup Distaff winner Unrivaled Belle, who topped the recent Keeneland November sale when selling in foal to Tapit to Mandy Pope’s Whisper Hill Farm for $3.8 million. Betty Moran’s Brushwood Stable purchased Unrivaled Belle for $2.8 million at the 2011 Keeneland November sale. The mare’s Malibu Moon filly was sent to Japan after selling for $550,000 at this year’s Keeneland September sale. Lifetime Record: 2-1-1-0, $42,400.
