Winning at first asking is a challenge in itself, but the road has been a bumpy one for maiden graduate Schivarelli. Between growing pains and a run of bad luck, the bay was continuously placed on the back-burner, but proved well worth the wait Monday at Aqueduct.
A $100,000 purchase at OBS April, where the chestnut completed a quarter mile in :21.3, he was secured by agent Deuce Greathouse on behalf of Ron and Ricki Rashinski’s Homewrecker Racing and Pike Place Racing.
“He was just a really nice colt that worked well, but green,” said Greathouse. “He was really pretty, with a nice frame. You could tell he had a lot of pieces he was going to have to fill into.”
Due to Schivarelli’s immaturity, and May 24 foaling date, connections gave him time immediately following the sale, but continuing setbacks left the chestnut off the race card.
“He was a really late foal and we gave him a little bit of time after we bought him because of the foaling,” said Greahouse. “He was close to running at the beginning of the November Churchill meet and he started to get a sore shin, so we gave him a little time. We thought he would be ready to run by the end of the meet, once he came through it, but we couldn’t get him in a race. Once he headed to New York, the weather at Belmont was rough and he didn’t get to breeze when we wanted to, in order to make some of the earlier maiden races at Aqueduct.”
Finally the time arrived. Trainer Eddie Kenneally put the finishing touches on Schivarelli and he entered the gate from the four hole of six entries at Aqueduct. Greathouse watched with high hopes
“Obviously you don’t know anything until they run in the afternoon, but he acted like a horse with a good mind and some ability,” he said. ”For a small field it was a pretty salty group of horses. He got completely sandwiched at the break and ran green with the dirt in his face, but made up a lot of ground considering. I thought he was very professional and im very happy with the effort.”
The colt’s pedigree suggests a future as a sprinter, however, his performance yesterday may lead elsewhere.
“My gut told me that he is a sprinter, maybe a one-turn mile. However, Cornelio [Velasquez] told Kenneally he thought the horse wanted to go farther. Hopefully he’s a horse that can carry some speed for a good distance of ground. Time will tell.”
Homewrecker Racing and Pike Place Racing currently own two horses in partnership. In addition to Schivarelli, Gambler’s Ghost (Ghost Zapper), who was purchased at OBS March, broke his maiden by five lengths at Gulfstream Jan. 1.
Pike Place is comprised of several individual investors put together by Greathouse.
