STEER CLEAR (f, 2, Street Sense–Simply Sunny, by Unbridled's Song) ran a game second 2 1/4 lengths behind 'TDN Rising Star' Ornellaia (Girvin) going a furlong shorter on debut Aug. 2. Working with the additional distance Friday, the popular 9-5 favorite was ridden for the lead and opened up a gap on this field from the very first jumps. Immaculate Moon (McKINzie), fourth in that same Aug. 2 race, drew her back in and kept her honest through a tempo of :22.93 and :46.21. Steer Clear stayed up front and was able to sneak away off the turn, coming home nicely 1 1/4 lengths in front of the more experienced Americathegreat (Curlin). Longshot Catchy (Medaglia d'Oro) outran her 37-1 odds to be third but sadly suffered a catastrophic injury to her front left on the gallop out and was euthanized on course. Her jockey Jose Lezcano was on his feet and transported to local hospital complaining of left shoulder pain. First dam Simply Sunny, though unraced herself, is a half to SW/GISP Reveron (Songandaprayer) and has produced five winners from seven to the track led by Fore Left (Twirling Candy), GSW-UAE, SW & MGSP-USA, $507,076.
