Street Sense’s daughter Politeness Claims G1 Myer Classic

Updated: October 31, 2015 at 9:32 am

Despite having won five stakes races–four at the group level–Politeness hadn’t managed to hit the board in four prior tries at the highest level, but the seasoned mare put that mark firmly behind her with an upset score in yesterday’s G1 Myer Classic. Politeness earned her first stakes win in Randwick’s G3 PJ Bell S. last April but wouldn’t see the winner’s circle again until November, when she won Sandown’s G3 Summoned S. after finishing seventh in this race. Put away for a summer break thereafter, Politeness won the Listed Bel Esprit S. Apr. 18 but was off the board in four remaining tries on the season, three of those in Group 1s. Given a winter holiday after finishing 10th in the G1 Tatt’s Club Tiara June 20, Politeness returned with a win in the G3 William Hill Series Ht-2 S. at Caulfield Sept. 19, and added the G3 Cape Grim Beef Steaks S. over the same course and 1200-meter trip three weeks later. Traveling in the two path in the second half of the field, Politeness was at least four-wide rounding the turn but shrugged off that inconvenience, sweeping to the lead under minimal urging in midstretch and winning going away. Politeness is expected to eventually join the broodmare band of part-owner Katsumi Yoshida in Japan. Politeness’s dam, Berengaria, has a yearling colt by Street Cry (Ire) and a produced a colt foal by Snitzel (Aus) this year.

Politeness is the second Group 1 winner Down Under for former Darley shuttler Street Sense, following G1 Rosehill Guineas and G1 Golden Rose S. winner Hallowed Crown (Aus), who is now at stud at Darley’s Kelvinside Stud in the Hunter Valley.
