Stud Fees Announced for Spendthrift Top Sires

Spendthrift Farm announced the 2016 fees of their leading sires Malibu Moon and Into Mischief. Malibu Moon’s fee will remain unchanged at $95,000 stands and nurses and Into Mischief will stand for a fee of $45,000 stands and nurses in 2016, up from $35,000 last year. The Grade I winner has been boosted by the accolades of his dual champion half-sister Beholder (Henny Hughes), who recently dominated a field of older males in the GI Pacific Classic.

“We felt like it was pretty easy to assess Into Mischief’s value right now,” said Ned Toffey, Spendthrift’s general manager. “We think $45,000 is a great value for him, and we thought we would open his book early so that breeders who like the horse have the opportunity to get into him. Last year, Into Mischief’s demand far outweighed supply, and although he covered 203 mares, we had to turn away a significant number of breeders.

“There is a lot that could happen between now and when the 2016 breeding season starts for both Malibu Moon and Into Mischief,” Toffey added. “There may be some adjustments to their fees depending on results. Mr. Hughes has always been a guy who wants us to be selling year ’round. We’re not too worried about conventional wisdom. Sometimes people like getting on board earlier in the year, which can be beneficial to breeders when it comes to stallions of this caliber. We’ve found breeders are very receptive to getting signed up earlier and earlier. It also lets us know where we stand.”
