FEROCIOUS (c, 3, Tale of the Cat–La Danielle, by Danehill), at $300,000 the second-highest-priced horse at last year’s Barretts May Sale, came within a head of belying his 17-1 odds when second in a 5 1/2-furlong dash at Santa Anita Jan. 18. Garnering more respect here at 5-2, the bay colt stayed closed to the pace, forged to lead a sixteenth out and held Reno Rebel (Big Brown) safe by a head. Ferocious was produced by a winning half to SW & GSP Excusez Moi (Fusaichi Pegasus), himself a half to one of the great broodmares of all time in Hasili (Ire).
