Om (Munnings) stamped himself as any kind with a powerhouse front-running 7 1/4-length maiden win at second asking at Del Mar Aug. 9 (video), good for a gaudy 98 Beyer Speed Figure.
While the flashy chestnut remained on the sidelines this summer/fall, the effort was further flattered by several of the also-rans, including subsequent GI Del Mar Futurity and GI FrontRunner S. one-two American Pharoah (Pioneerof The Nile) (fifth, beaten 9 1/4 lengths) and Calculator (In Summation) (fourth, beaten 8 1/4 lengths). The third-place finisher that day One Lucky Dane (Lookin At Lucky) was tabbed as a “TDN Rising Star” after airing at Santa Anita in early October while the sixth-place finisher Daddy D T (Scat Daddy) went on to graduate in the Oak Tree Juvenile Turf S. Sept. 3 and place third in the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Oct. 31, respectively. Distant runer-up Iron Fist (Tapit) returned to complete the trifecta as a maiden in the Del Mar Futurity.
“We gave him four months off–he had a little filling in a hock that he was a little sore on and he’s just starting back this week,” trainer Dan Hendricks offered. “I’m going to take my time, there’s no reason to rush him. He’ll probably be back at Santa Anita with me in about a month.”
Hendricks added, “We just watched one after the other win [out of that maiden race]. I don’t even know how many maidens were broke out of that race.” –Steve Sherack
