Indianapolis, an impressive debut victor at Hollywood Park Nov. 24, had been working strongly for this stakes debut and was sent off the heavy favorite in the short field of four. In the mix in the early strides, the dark bay settled into a stalking second through an opening quarter in :21.80. He effortlessly moved to the lead on the turn after a half in :44.97, turned back Papa Turf after five furlongs in :56.94 and powered clear under a hand ride. “We’ve always thought that he has that super-star status and he showed it today,” said winning trainer Bob Baffert. Baffert added he will now look to have Indianapolis stretch out. “Now, he’ll run in stakes races,” he said. “From here on out, hopefully up to the first Saturday in May, we’ll put him on a schedule that will stretch him out and hopefully we’ll win some big races. Keeping him healthy and happy, that’s all we can really do.” Click for the brisnet.com chart or VIDEO.
