Twirling Candy Colt Tops TATIRE Day One

A colt from the first crop of Lane’s End’s Twirling Candy (Candy Ride {Arg}) made his fourth trip through a sales ring a profitable one, fetching a final bid of €115,000 from Peter & Ross Doyle Bloodstock to top day one of the three-day Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale Tuesday afternoon. 

Consigned by The Castlebridge Consignment, the bay is the first foal out of MSP Blue Angel (Ire) (Oratorio {Ire}), a half-sister to GSW Empowering (Ire), and from the family of MG1SW Bigstone (Ire) and GSW & MGISP More Chocolate (Malibu Moon). Hip 173 made his first visit to the sales in utero at Keeneland November in 2012, and attracted a bid of $95,000 from the BBA Ireland. The bay was led out unsold on a bid of $65,000 when offered last November and was purchased for $35,000 as a pinhooking prospect at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July Sale a little more than two months ago. 

“I have not seen any by Twirling Candy before,” said Doyle, “but if they look like this horse, then he’ll be ok. Richard Hannon Sr. trained this colt’s dam Blue Angel and she was a 102-rated filly. There looks to be a lot of the dam-sire Oratorio about this horse and we’ve been lucky with him. This is a very nice individual.” 

Three hips later, a Rangefield Bloostock-consigned son of Dark Angel (Ire) accounted for the day’s other six-figure sale when hammered down to Bobby O’Ryan and trainer Dermot Weld for €110,000. The Mar. 14 foal, consigned by Baroda & Colbinstown Studs, is out ofBogini (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}), a half-sister to listed stakes winner Alkasser (Ire) (Shamardal) and hails from the female family of the good sprinter Dandy Man (Ire) (Mozart {Ire}). 

A total of 190 horses were reported as sold for gross receipts of €3.75 million, an increase of 12.5% despite 62 fewer lots catalogued. The day’s average was the first time since 2007 that it has topped the €19,000 mark, while the median showed a 27% improvement over 2013.
