Wandjina to Ascot, Then Newgate

G1 Australian Guineas scorer Wandjina (Aus) (Snitzel {Aus}) will target the G1 Diamond Jubilee S. at Royal Ascot before retiring to Newgate Stud later this year. The Gai Waterhouse-trained 3-year-old finished second to Dissident (Aus) (Sebring {Aus}), who will also enter stud at Newgate in September, in Saturday’s G1 All Aged S.
“Gai Waterhouse said to us, ‘you can’t retire this horse [Wandjina]–he only has to travel well to win the [Diamond] Jubilee.’ She is as confident about it as [trainer] Peter [Moody] was with Dissident, so you have to back her judgement,” Newgate’s Managing Director, Henry Field, told the Sydney Morning Herald. “We will have three of the most exciting stallions to go to stud this season and, hopefully, a Royal Ascot winner.”

Wandjina is also expected to take in the G1 July Cup at Newmarket before returning Down Under.

Australia is set to be represented by one of its largest-ever Royal Ascot contingents. Another 3-year-old sprinter, Brazen Beau (Aus) (I Am Invincible {Aus}), has been nominated to both the Diamond Jubilee and the G1 King’s Stand S. over a furlong shorter, and 5-year-old mare Shamal Wind (Aus) (Dubawi {Ire}) will contest the King’s Stand. G1 Queen Elizabeth S. victor Criterion (NZ) (Sebring {Aus}) could also head North after contesting Sunday’s G1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup. in Hong Kong.

James Harron, who purchased Wandjina as a yearling and manages Shamal Wind for owners Love Racing, told the SMH, “It is a great opportunity for both horses. We are going to take Wandjina over there and showcase a son of the one of the best stallions in Australia, if not the world. It will give him a chance to make himself a stallion on both sides of the world and we believe the tough six [furlongs] uphill will suit him.”
