Wild Dude Upsets the Bing Crosby
Updated: July 26, 2015 at 10:39 pm
Wild Dude (Wildcat Heir), a disregarded 11-1 outsider, closed powerfully to win Sunday’s GI Bing Crosby H. and earn an automatic berth to the GI Breeders’ Cup Sprint. The 5-year-old settled off the pace in fourth as Distinctiv Passion (With Distinction) took the field through fractions of :22.01 and :44.73. Favored Masochistic (Sought After) launched his rally turning for home and hit the front at the top of the lane, but Wild Dude was winding up for his run in the center of the track and the bay surged past the favorite in deep stretch to win going away. Kobe’s Back (Flatter), who was left at the gate and trailed the field throughout much of the six-furlong contest, was flying late to get up for third.
Wild Dude, winner of last year’s GII Palos Verdes S., returned from nine months on the sidelines to finish third behind the ill-fated Conquest Two Step (Two Step Salsa) in the 2015 edition of the race. He defeated Kobe’s Back and Conquest Two Step to take the Mar. 7 GII San Carlos S. Sixth when shipped east for the Apr. 4 GI Carter H., the bay was third behind Distinctiv Passion in the May 25 GIII Los Angeles S. and behind Masochistic in the June 27 GI Triple Bend S. last time out.
