Will Take Charge Latest Work ‘One of His Best’
Willis Horton and Three Chimneys Farm’s champion 3-year-old male Will Take Charge (Unbridled’s Song) is back at Churchill Downs after spending the summer at Saratoga, and trainer D. Wayne Lukas deemed his most recent workout–a five-furlong move in 1:00.40 this past Wednesday–“one of his best on this track.” The chestnut, winner of this year’s GII Oaklawn H. and most recently a solid third to Moreno (Ghostzapper) and Itsmyluckyday (Lawyer Ron) in the GI Whitney H. Aug. 2, is expected to return to the Empire State for the GI Jockey Club Gold Cup Sept. 27. That will serve as a prep for the GI Breeders’ Cup Classic, a race in which Will Take Charge was a desperately close second in 2013. Connections elected to skip the GI Woodward S. Aug. 30 in favor of training up to the Gold Cup. “I said before he needed a breather; so I stand by my decision and we expect him to come up big in these next two,” Lukas said. “He’s still right on track for the Jockey Club Gold Cup and everything has been good with him.”
