Her champion stablemate Tepin (Bernstein) returned to the races with a vengeance in the GIII Endeavour S. a fortnight ago, and this Saturday, it'll be Eclipse Award and Sovereign Award finalist Catch a Glimpse (City Zip) who will try to pick up where she left off.
Well beaten in an off-turf maiden over a sloppy Saratoga main track July 30, the chestnut made a smooth transition to the grass with a front-running defeat of Pulled the Goalie (Parading) in a seven-furlong Woodbine maiden Aug. 22 followed by a five-length romp over 'TDN Rising Star' Gamble's Ghost (Ghostzapper) in the GII Natalma S. at the one-turn mile Sept. 12. In her most recent visit to the races, Catch a Glimpse came from just off the speed to annex a yielding-turf renewal of the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf Oct. 30 at Keeneland and has trained exceptionally well for this comebacker.
“She's been down here all winter with us and has been breezing really well,” assistant trainer Norman Casse said. “This race has been on our radar all along, so we're excited to get her started. We'll go race-to-race with her after Saturday; we'll see how she comes out of the race. There's no concrete plan in place for her.”
Lira (Giant's Causeway), like Catch a Glimpse perfect in three tries on the turf, should present a stiff challenge for the favorite. A good-looking maiden winner during the Gulfstream Park West meeting Oct. 11, the Mathis Stable colorbearer made it two in a row in that track's Wait a While S. Nov. 28. The 8-5 favorite in this track's Ginger Brew S. Jan. 2, Lira was hopelessly locked away in upper stretch, but angled out when the daylight came and outfinished Pricedtoperfection (Temple City) to take it by a half-length. The latter, a full-sister to the talented Miss Temple City, franked the form of the Ginger Brew with a rallying success in the GIII Sweetest Chant S. Jan. 30.
Gone Away (Leroidesanimaux {Brz}) looms an interesting darkhorse play. A troubled fourth, beaten less than three lengths by subsequent GIII Jimmy Durante S. victrix Family Meeting (Sky Mesa) over soft Laurel turf Nov. 7, the bay managed to overcome an overland trip on the far turn of a Dec. 20 maiden over this course and closed her final three furlongs in :35.89 to score by a half-length, with next-out maiden winner Verbouwen (Kitten's Joy) third.
