Boom's Time At Last

Boom Time | Bronwen Healy

Decorated trainer David Hayes enjoyed one of the defining moments of his career when Boom Time (Aus) (Flying Spur {Aus}) sprang a 50-1 upset and led home a huge-priced quinella in Saturday's A$3-million G1 Caulfield Cup. Not only does Hayes train the 6-year-old at Lindsay Park with his son Ben Hayes and nephew Tom Dabernig; he is also the sole owner.

Hayes told Racing.com he purchased the horse, who had also in the past been plagued by injury, in April when his former owner, Kim Loxton, found himself unable to pay the bills.

“This horse had bowed a tendon and he'd just run a shocker in the Sydney Cup and wasn't very marketable at all,” Hayes said. “But I knew the horse had decent ability and I didn't want to see him leave the property so I purchased him. [Loxton] had gotten into a little bit of trouble with the banks. Unfortunately, he had to sell out of everything and shut down. But he rings in from time to time. I'll talk to him tonight for sure and I owe him a lot of drinks.”

Eleventh of 14 in the aforementioned Sydney Cup, Boom Time returned in Hayes's colours in a Moonee Valley handicap on Aug. 26, checking in third, but dropped back to ninth over the same track two weeks later. He improved for the added ground in the 2040 metre G3 JRA Cup at Moonee Valley on Sept. 29, checking in third, and was fourth over this track and trip in the G3 Herbert Power S. last weekend.

Despite Hayes's faith in the horse, another stroke of luck was needed for Boom Time to make it into the Caulfield Cup field, and that happened at the expense of Riichi Kondo and trainer Darren Weir last week when Admire Deus (Jpn) (Admire Don {Jpn}) unfortunately suffered an injury that ruled him out of the race, leaving an opening.

Biding his time behind an early tussle for the lead under Cory Parish as the field passed the stands the first time, Boom Time settled about fifth on the fence down the backstretch as Sir Isaac Newton (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) opened a big lead from the mare Single Gaze (Aus) (Not A Single Doubt {Aus}). The pacesetter had opened a lead of about 15 lengths by the time he passed the 1000 metre mark, but the field quickly ate into it thereafter, and he was swallowed up rounding the bend by Single Gaze and Amelie's Star (Aus) (Testa Rossa {Aus}) as the G1 Australian Derby winner Jon Snow (NZ) (Iffraaj {GB}) made a bid three wide. Boom Time, meanwhile, was weaving his way between rivals on the inside with favoured Johannes Vermeer (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) on his heels, and he split Single Gaze and Amelie's Star at the 150 metre mark to take the lead and drew off to win by 1 1/4 lengths.

Hayes paid credit to low-profile stable jockey Parish post-race.

“A lot of jockey selections are political,” Hayes told Racing.com. “Owners have a lot of input into jockeys but I trained it and owned it and so it was easy to put Cory on. He knew the horse. He knew he went a bit fast last week and he didn't tumble into that this time.”

Hayes, who was training his third Caulfield Cup winner after sending out Sheikh Hamdan's Fraar (Topsider) in 1993 and Tawqeet (Kingmambo) in 2006, added, “It makes it really special doing it with the family. Ben was very emotional. I think he saw his inheritance going up.”

Pedigree Notes…

Boom Time becomes the 13th Group 1 winner for his pensioned former champion sire Flying Spur. He is the seventh foal and lone stakes winner out of his seven-time winning dam, who this year produced a colt by All American (Aus). Appearing under the third dam is the multiple group winner Scandinavia (Aus) (Snippets {Aus}), whose progeny include Group 1 winner Magnus (Aus) (Flying Spur {Aus}) and the unraced Helsinge (Aus) (Desert Sun {GB}), the dam of unbeaten world champion sprinter Black Caviar (Aus) (Bel Esprit {Aus}) and her four-time Group 1-winning half-brother and leading second-crop sire All Too Hard (Aus) (Casino Prince {Aus}).
