Cherokee Run Dies

Sean Avery | A Coglianese

Cherokee Run (Runaway Groom–Cherokee Dame, by Silver Saber), champion sprinter of 1994 and sire of two juvenile champions, was euthanized due to declining health. The 26-year-old stallion entered stud at Jonabell Farm, then owned by the Bell family, in 1996 and continued to stand as a Darley stallion once the farm was purchased by Sheikh Mohammed in 2001.

“Cherokee Run was certainly a significant stallion at Jonabell in the 90s and early 2000s, but he also played a meaningful role in the farm's transition when Sheikh Mohammed established Darley here in Lexington in 2001,” said Godolphin President Jimmy Bell. “He was a fierce competitor on the track, a real favorite in the barn, and a wonderful link to the Mac Robinson family.”

On the racetrack, Cherokee Run captured the 1994 GI Breeders' Cup Sprint and GII Frank J. DeFrancis Memorial Dash and was runner-up in the GI Metropolitan H. As a 3-year-old, he won the GII Dwyer S. and was second in the GI Preakness S.

Cherokee Run is the sire of 2007 champion juvenile colt War Pass, as well as 1999 champion juvenile filly Chilukki. Among his 16 graded or group winners are Zanjero, During, Kafwain, Cherokee Queen and Sir Cherokee. Sean Avery became his last graded winner with his win in the 2011 GI Alfred G. Vanderbilt H. Cherokee Run's progeny have earned almost $55 million to date.
