Fillies Dominate Day Three at FTKOCT

While colts dominated the first two days of the Fasig-Tipton October sale, it was ladies day during the final session. In addition to the session- and sale-topping daughter of Tapit, two other fillies were the only additional lots to reach the $300,000 barrier.
The second-highest price of the day was hip 887, and Samantha Siegel's Jay Em Ess Stable went to $360,000 to secure the daughter of Medaglia d'Oro–Pinafores Pride (Saint Ballado).
“She looked like a diamond in the rough,” said Siegel. “A lot of them are coming in here a little furry with not as much sale prep as a September horse, but that has never ever bothered me. She showed herself well all the time.”
As the October sale is the last major yearling auction of the year, Siegel knew she might have a battle on her hands for the classy filly.
“I think at a lot of the sales, it was hard to get horses earlier in the year, and some people still don't have the kind of numbers that they want,” she said. “Good horses that pass their vet reports are bringing a lot of money. I knew I would to have to swing hard. I was the underbidder on the Super Saver colt the first day. I swung hard at him and I couldn't get him, but I am very happy to have her.”
The Super Saver–Crocodile Tuff (Petionville) colt ended up selling to Oussama Aboughazale's International Equities for $370,000 during Monday's opening session.
Siegel's new purchase was consigned by Shawhan Place on behalf of breeders Rod and Margaret Ferguson of Canada. The filly is a half-sister to Grade III winner Southdale (Street Cry {Ire}).
“I saw a lot of potential in her,” said Siegel. “Next week, we are going to send our yearlings down to Ocala to Bryan Rice. She'll get broken down there, and next year we will make a decision on where she goes. Nothing has been predetermined. We will enjoy watching her grow up and mature. We will see what she grows into, and it is all about the dream.”
Later in the afternoon, another filly, hip 1102, drew attention when she sold for $300,000 to Three Chimneys Farm, agent. Consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, the chestnut Eskendereya filly is out of the stakes-winning Lord At War (Arg) mare Star of Goshen, making her a half-sister to Grade I winner and promising young sire Pioneerof the Nile (Empire Maker).
