Group 1-Winning Rider Dies

South African jockey Alec Forbes died suddenly on Thursday just hours after riding a winner at Scottsville, according to published reports. According to Racing Post, the 41-year-old had complained to fellow riders about feeling unwell, and began vomiting during the evening. He went to hospital where it was discovered he had pneumonia. He ultimately died of organ failure.

Forbes rode over 800 winners and won seven Group 1 races, including two aboard sprinter Val De Ra (SAf) (Var), the dam of Wednesday Scottsville maiden winner Miss Frankel (SAf) (Frankel {GB}), the first winner for her sire in that country.
