'Hawk' the Chalk in Grey

Golden Hawk (inside) | WEG/Michael Burns

Mark Casse-trained Live Oak homebred Golden Hawk (Tapit) figures to be well-fancied in the five-horse GIII Grey S. at Woodbine Sunday. The grandson of Canada's 1995 champion 2-year-old filly Silken Cat (Storm Cat)–who also produced Eclipse-winning sprinter and top sire Speightstown (Gone West)–fought from start to finish in his grassy seven-panel unveiling Sept. 4, ultimately getting the job done by a head over a next-out graduate. Night Watchman (First Defence), who is still a maiden, was a distant runner-up in his second start over yielding local sod Aug. 26. The winner that day was Golden Hawk's 'TDN Rising Star'-winning stablemate Conquest Farenheit (Scat Daddy), who returned to finish second in the GII Summer S. Night Watchman found one better again over track and trip Sept. 11. Han Sense (Hansen) graduated first up in the Iowa Cradle S. Aug. 13 before finishing fifth–three spots ahead of Preemptive Strike (Harlan's Holiday)–in the Kentucky Downs Juvenile S. Sept. 3. He'll add blinkers for the first time here. King and His Court (Court Vision), third last time in the six-furlong Colin S., rounds out the field.
