Over the next week or so as this year's event approaches Dec. 10, Alan Carasso will take a look back at his top six moments in the history of the Hong Kong International Races. For the first installment, we remember the wildly popular galloper Red Cadeaux, who was a regular visitor to Sha Tin in the early part of this decade.
#6 RED CADEAUX – 2012 Hong Kong Vase
Red Cadeaux (GB) (Cadeaux Genereux {GB}) amassed a legion of devoted fans worldwide, having made five straight appearances in the G1 Melbourne Cup with other visits to Dubai, Japan and Singapore. That he would be a regular at the Hong Kong International Races was logical, as his owner Ronald Arculli served as chairman of the Hong Kong Jockey Club from 2002-2006. The popular chestnut participated in the G1 Vase each year from 2011 to 2014, with his crowning moment coming in 2012. Inside through the straight for the first time, Red Cadeaux was taken three wide and into the clear rounding the first time. Always prominent thereafter, he was in the thick of it in upper stretch and called on his stamina to outlast Japan's Jaguar Mail (Jpn) (Jungle Pocket {Jpn}) (video). Red Cadeaux was fourth in defence of his title in 2013 and sixth the following season.
