A full field is set to face the starter for Sunday's S$1.15-million Emirates Singapore Derby, an event over the 2000 metres that has a distinctly wide-open feel to it.
Well Done (NZ) (Falkirk {NZ}) will be making his seventh start of 2016, but brings career-best form into the Derby. Winner of a Class 3 handicap over the Polytrack May 20, the chestnut was a $45 (8-1) chance in the second leg of the local 4-Year-Old Challenge, the June 19 Patron's Bowl, and sat a midfield trip, got first run on his rivals and reported home a diminishing neck to the good of Majestic Moments (NZ) (Darci Brahma {NZ}). Leading jockey Michael Rodd was in the saddle for an easy barrier trial and takes over at the controls on Well Done, who drew a nice gate in stall six.
Majestic Moments is conditioned by South African Patrick Shaw, best known for his work with Rocket Man (Aus) (Viscount {Aus}), but himself a two-time Derby-winning trainer, including last year's renewal with Quechua (Arg) (Pure Prize). The bay gelding was running on when fourth, beaten 2 3/4 lengths behind long-odds Titanium (NZ) (Tavistock {NZ}) in the Stewards' Cup over 1400m May 29. The latter, who is bred to stay this trip and further, will need to avoid a troubled trip from the one hole and exits a disappointing 10th in the Patron's Bowl.
The Hideyuki Takaoka-trained and Alan Munro-ridden Better Life (Aus) (Smarty Jones) struck for the fairer sex in the 2013 Derby, and that human duo will team here with the sneaky Believe Yourself (Aus) (Sebring {Aus}). Fourth to Mossfun (Aus) (Mossman {Aus}) in the 2014 G1 Golden Slipper S. when conditioned by Gerald Ryan, the filly has yet to finish worse than third in four tries this season, filling third spot while not extended in the Stewards' Cup two back and checking badly in the Patron's Bowl before finishing a little more than a length in back of Well Done. She should sit a good trip from gate four and looms a major danger while in receipt of four poundsĀ from her male rivals.
