Three colts each fetched bids of C$85,000 to top Thursday's single-session CTHS Canadian Premier Yearling Sale held at Woodbine. The catalogue of 320 Canadian-bred yearlings was fatter by 14% over that of last year's and the sale's major statistical categories saw moderate losses. CTHS reported sales on 204 horses for turnover of C$3.63 million, with the resulting average of C$17,794 representing a decline of 7.5%, while the median of C$10,000 was off by 9.1% from the C$11,000 recorded in 2016.
In addition to the Victor's Cry colt who fetched the joint-top price as hip 120, a pair of offerings consigned by Richard G. Hogan as agent joined in later in the afternoon. Hip 262 was purchased by trainer Roger Attfield, who conditioned both the colt's sire, 2008 Queen's Plate hero Not Bourbon, and his 2009 GI Del Mar Oaks-winning dam Internallyflawless (Giant's Causeway), both on behalf of Charles Fipke, who also bred hip 262. Internal Bourbon, a full-sister to the co-topper, is a stakes winner of over $300,000, while the further female family includes the tremendous racemare Bosra Sham.
The Hogan-consigned hip 292 was hammered down to Barry Kerbel for C$85,000. Goldmart Farms bred the chestnut son of GI Shoemaker Mile winner Victor's Cry from Miss Dragonfly (Grand Slam), who is a full-brother to Goldmart's 2016 Bull Page S. winner Dragon's Cry. Hip 292 is out of an unraced full-sister to Fire Slam, a graded winner going short and long.
The sale's top filly went through early in the session. Hip 9, a daughter of Old Forester and the first foal from Peggy'sanexecutive (Bold Executive), a winning half-sister to SW Dancing On Fire (Philanthropist) She was sold to Danny Dion's Bear Stables Ltd & Colebrook Farm, who bred the filly and stayed in for a piece, for C$75,000. Richard Hogan also consigned the filly topper.
