In this ongoing series, Alan Carasso takes a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. A filly by Spendthrift Farm's Malibu Moon has run extremely well in two starts on the turf to begin her career, but tries the dirt at Nakayama Racecourse for the first time this Sunday.

5th-NKY, ¥13,720,000 (US$126), Alw, 3yo, 1800m
CHILLY SILVER (f, 3, Malibu Moon–Jacey's Reward, by Johannesburg) validated odds of 5-1 to break her maiden at first asking in a 1600m turf test at Kyoto Jan. 17 (video) and gave an equally positive account of herself in her first try against winners, going down by a half-length when third at Chukyo Mar. 11 (video). The $85K Fasig-Tipton July yearling turned $240K Barretts March juvenile tries the dirt for the first time here and is clearly well bred to negotiate the surface switch. The chestnut's dam, purchased by Glencrest Farm for $75K carrying this filly in utero at Keeneland January in 2014, is a half-sister to Magical Fantasy (Diesis {GB}), a dual Grade I winner on turf, but placed in the GII La Canada S. on the main. This is also the family of GII Breeders' Cup Marathon winner London Bridge (Arch). Leading jockey Christophe Lemaire retains the mount. B-Glencrest Farm (KY) –Alan Carasso
