NYS Gaming Commission to Hold Retired Racehorse Meeting

A meeting on the issue of retired racehorses will be hosted by the New York State Gaming Commission Tuesday, Aug. 29, at 12:30 p.m. at Empire State College, 111 West Avenue, Saratoga Springs. The meeting, which follows on successful events in each of the last two years, continues the Commission's efforts to focus and drive resources and attention to the issue of racehorse retirement.

The meeting is set to feature a discussion of the Commission's study to locate New York-bred Thoroughbreds that have not raced since 2012. Representatives of the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance and other TAA-accredited organizations will also offer updates and other recent developments.

In 2016, the Commission debuted a film highlighting the importance of responsible aftercare in New York State, which is now required-viewing for any owner, trainer or assistant trainer seeking a license or license renewal in the state.

Old Friends at Cabin Creek recently honored the Commission for its “commitment to our horses through support of Aftercare” at its annual “After the Race” dinner Aug. 6 in Saratoga Springs.

“We are honored to be recognized by Old Friends for our efforts, which would not be possible without the great work of their organization and many others across New York State,” said Commission Acting Executive Director Ronald Ochrym. “Our meeting on August 29 underscores New York State's ongoing commitment to responsible aftercare. We hope to provide a platform for these organizations to discuss improvements and challenges in aftercare, in the hopes of driving more attention and resources to the important work they do. We are committed to ensuring safe homes for the race horses–both Thoroughbred and Standardbred–that do so much for all of us.”
