Pariah Returns A Winner

Pariah | Bronwen Healy

'TDN Rising Star' Pariah (Aus) (Redoute's Choice {Aus}) added a second group win on his 3-year-old debut at Rosehill on Saturday, taking out the G3 San Domenico S. Dropping back to sit second-last from his outside barrier, the $2.50 favourite got onto the rail under Blake Shinn and gradually began to make up ground rounding the bend. Moving wide for running room turning into the straight, Pariah never looked in danger thereafter, striding to the lead under a handride at the 150 meter mark and hitting the line a length the best. The A$1.6-million yearling Chauffeur (Aus) (Snitzel {Aus}), the only horse trailing Pariah in the early stages, followed him throughout and got up for second (video).

Pariah, who was a A$700,000 Inglis Easter yearling and is trained by Peter and Paul Snowden, races for a partnership including James Harron's colts syndicate, Arrowfield Stud, Belinda Bateman and the Ingham family. He earned his 'TDN Rising Star' badge with a debut win in last season's G3 Canonbury S. Following that were seconds in the G3 Blue Diamond Prelude and G1 Blue Diamond S., and he was last seen at the races checking in 11th in a boggy G1 Golden Slipper on Mar. 18.

Pariah has the option to take in the A$10-million The Everest on Oct. 14, with James Harron Bloodstock holding a slot in the 1200 metre sprint, and co-trainer Paul Snowden stressed that options are open for the colt.

“He'll run in the [G3] Run To The Rose and then obviously the [G1] Golden Rose,” he said. “Probably after that 1400 metre run we'll determine what avenue we take with him, if we do press onto the mile or look at The Everest or freshen up for the [G1] Coolmore [Stud S.],” said co-trainer Paul Snowden. “They're certainly good things to be thinking about. The Golden Rose is his main target thus far, hopefully we can tick that box and then we can really think about what his future holds. He's certainly on his way and has a lot of improvement to come, we are just fortunate enough to have him in our stable.”

Down south at Moonee Valley, 'TDN Rising Star' and Golden Slipper third Tulip (Aus) (Pierro {Aus}) was overturned on her seasonal debut by Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa's Roomooz (Aus) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}). Roomooz, a $7 chance, tracked the pace about two lengths away early with $2.30 favourite Tulip racing a bit green on her heels. Roomooz, a A$480,000 Inglis Easter yearling, grabbed the leading passing the 100 metre mark with Tulip breathing down her neck, and she was put to a drive to hold off that rival, who had also won last season's G3 Magic Night S., by a nose.

Roomooz, who trainer Tony McEvoy told Racing.com is “certainly my best filly,” has the G1 Thousand Guineas on Oct. 14 as her key spring target.

Jockey Craig Williams was not discouraged by Tulip's defeat, telling Racing.com, “I thought she went excellent. She over-raced a bit early. You swap barriers, you swap positions, you swap results. She's first-up, she's going to improve a lot. She finished off really well, unfortunately we didn't get the desired result.”

Also at Moonee Valley on Saturday, last year's G1 Melbourne Cup winner Almandin (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}) made his first run since that Nov. 1 marathon, finishing three-quarter of a length second in a 2040 metre handicap.
