Records Broken At Premier Session Two

Sale topping Teofilo colt | Inglis

Session two of Inglis's Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale took place Wednesday, with records recorded for average as well as the top price at the sale for both a colt and a filly. The single-session part two built on the robust part one that took place the preceding three days. A total of 147 yearlings were sold Wednesday for A$6,718,000, compared to 116 sold for A$3,710,500 last year. Like in session one, session two posted a significantly reduced buyback rate, which was 11.9% compared to 18.9% 12 months ago. The record average of A$45,701 was up 42.8% on last year, and the A$40,000 median was also up 42.8%.

“Vendors and buyers recognised the value of the products on offer, and we are delighted to have been able to match these expectations and facilitate four wonderful days of trade,” said Inglis Victorian Manager Simon Vivian upon the conclusion of the Premier sale. “Thanks go to all the vendors who brought quality horses that were prepped to an exceptional standard.”

Trainer Ciaron Maher plucked last year's G1 Crown Oaks winner Jameka (Aus) (Myboycharlie {Ire}) out of this sale in 2013, and the Victorian-based conditioner will be hoping for a similar fate for the sale-topping Teofilo (Ire) colt (lot 708) that he bought from Yarran Thoroughbreds for A$220,000. The bay is the second foal out of the unraced Alynya (Aus) (Husson {Arg}), a daughter of Group 3 winner A Country Girl (Aus) (Singspiel {Ire}).

“He was a similar type of horse to Jameka,” Maher said. “Teofilo is doing a great job and it was a nice page. He's just a lovely athletic horse that really uses himself, which is what I look for. I'm not surprised he topped the session because he's such a lovely horse, and I'm thrilled to get him. There has been strong competitive buying on the nice horses and the results are a good sign for breeders and also for Victorian racing.”

Teofilo's best Australian runner yet, the G1 Doncaster Mile winner Kermadec (NZ), is one of two for his sire to line up in Saturday's G1 Canterbury S. at Randwick.

Paul Moroney was the underbidder on the sale-topping colt, and he jumped back into the fray a short time later to secure lot 746, a colt by Artie Schiller, for A$150,000. The bay is the first foal out of the placed Dynaformer mare Diamond Life (Aus), and Artie Schiller has gained an increased profile Down Under as of late thanks to G3 Blue Diamond Prelude winner and G1 Blue Diamond second Flying Artie (Aus) and the G2 Skyline S. victor Good Standing (Aus).

The progeny of up-and-coming sire Written Tycoon (Aus) have proven popular in Australian sales rings thus far this year, and the sire of the Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner Capitalist (Aus) was also responsible for Wednesday's record-priced filly, lot 672, who cost Eric Pipersberg of Next Level Bloodstock A$130,000. Pipersberg revealed that Troy and Leon Corstens will train the chestnut, and noted the conditioners were familiar with the filly's stakes-placed half-sister Burning Front (Aus) (Primus {Aus}).

“Burning Front beat Corstens' smart galloper Del Prado, so that really resonated with me,” he said. “I just loved her, she's a beautiful mover that filled my eye. Written Tycoon is hot right now, so that I don't think we'll have any trouble syndicating her.”
