Multiple Group 1 winning jockey Clare Lindop has announced her intention to retire from the saddle in May after this year's Adelaide Racing Carnival. In a career spanning 23 years Lindop has ridden over 1,400 winners with four of those coming at the top level and over 50 in stakes races. Lindop has also been a pioneer for female jockeys, becoming the first Australian woman to ride in the G1 Melbourne Cup, the first woman to win the Adelaide Premiership and also the first to win the G1 Victoria Derby. “I want to thank everyone who has helped and supported me throughout my career. I've enjoyed the journey and have been privileged to work with some wonderful colleagues, trainers, officials and administrators, many of whom I consider dear friends,” Lindop said on Tuesday.

Lindop got married last year and is keeping her options open over what path she will follow when she hangs up her saddle. “Since marrying Damien Wilton last year I have been thinking about my future beyond racing. I'm excited for my next chapter, whether I remain involved in the racing community, or pursue new challenges in business or parenthood. I'm extremely passionate about racing, women in sport and I hope to become more actively involved with charity work,” she added.
