+HANDSOME THIEF (IRE) (c, 4, Shamardal–Insoumise {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}) validated $3.70 (27-10) favoritism to make a successful and promising start to his career for Paul Fudge's Waratah Thoroughbreds Friday evening at Moonee Valley. Settled in fourth spot and traveling sweetly for Brad Rawiller in the one out and one back spot, the blaze-faced bay worked his way into contention with 400m to travel and was angled out full of run off the final quarter. He quickly put a few lengths on his rivals and sprinted home to score by an impressive 3 3/4 lengths. “He trialled up well coming here tonight, but sometimes you don't know under race conditions, but he got a great ride from Brad and he let down really well, so going forward, it's promising,” champion trainer Darren Weir told Racing.com. “All Waratah horses are beautifully bred horses, and hopefully this one can go on with the job, get over a bit further and win a better race. He's a sound horse; I've given him plenty of time, so there's no reason why he couldn't race on for quite a while now.” Handsome Thief is the first foal for his dam, an €350,000 purchase by Fudge from the draft of Wertheimer et Frere at the 2011 Arqana December Mixed Sales. Insoumise is a half-sister to G1SW Plumeria (GB) (Anabaa) and to GSW Balladeuse (Fr) (Singspiel {Ire}), the dam of 2016 G1 Prix Vermeille winner Left Hand (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), while Handsome Thief's third dam Featherhill (Fr) (Lyphard) is responsible for French champion and G1SW Groom Dancer. Insoumise's foal of 2014, Thunder Speed (GB) (Dylan Thomas {Ire}), won his maiden over the Dundalk all-weather Dec. 23 and produced colts for Waratah by Oasis Dream (GB) in 2015 and 2016.
