Showtime In The Canterbury

Global Glamour | Bronwen Healy

Beaten less than a length into third in the G1 Futurity S. (1400m) on Feb. 24, 3-year-old colt Showtime (Aus) (Snitzel {Aus}) heads into the A$500,000 G1 Canterbury S. in fine form and in the small field could upset some of the big players. A full-brother to Group 1 winner Sweet Idea (Aus) (Snitzel {Aus}), the million-dollar colt needs that elusive Group 1 victory to secure a stallion career and this could be just the race for him.

Close-up in third when resuming in the G2 Millie Fox S., Chris Waller's Group 1 winner Foxplay (Aus) (Foxwedge {Aus}) has strong second-up form and from the outside gate, the mare will likely sit back in the field and come charging late.

Another pair of mares who look capable of playing their role in the finish is the Kris Lees-trained Invincible Gem (Aus) (I Am Invincible {Aus}) and the dual Group 1 winner Global Glamour (Aus) (Star Witness {Aus}). Having her first run on Saturday since September, 4-year-old Invincible Gem finished second in the G1 Randwick Guineas three starts back followed by success in a Group 2 before then finishing third at the same level. Readied by two barrier trials, the mare ticks plenty of boxes with good form first-up as well as at the track and distance.

Dropping down to the 1300m is the only concern with last start G2 Apollo S. winner Endless Drama (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}), who has recorded two very good efforts at his two starts this campaign, both at 1400m. A win at Group 1 level would see the Qatar Bloodstock-owned 6-year-old become a valuable stallion commodity and by selecting race options away from stablemate Winx (Aus) (Street Cry {USA}), this could be the best option.
