A son of Silvano (Ger) was one of four lots to top the R2-million mark, and the overall top-priced lot, during the opening session of the three-day TBA National Yearling Sale in Johannesburg, South Africa on Wednesday. The colt (lot 42) from Lammerskraal Stud was picked up by Jehan Malherbe of Form Bloodstock for R4-million, and he is out of Maxixe (SAf) (Western Winter), a full-sister to champion miler Capetown Noir (SAf) and Grade 3 winner Across The Ice (SAf). He was one of three seven-figure buys for Malherbe on the day, that group also including a R1.8-million colt by another champion sire in Dynasty (SAf) (lot 121).
Lot 42 will go into training with Dean Kannemeyer, who said, “He ticked all the boxes; an athletic and really magnificent specimen. I know that he was shortlisted by many and it was clear that he was going to go for money. I have trained the family and they can run. I'm just very pleased that our buyer dug deep and wanted him.”
The highest-priced filly of the day was lot 67, a daughter of Captain Al (SAf) purchased by trainer Justin Snaith for R3.6-million. From Cheveley Stud's draft, she is from an immediate family choc-full of black-type. She is a full-sister to champion 3-year-old filly Bela-Bela (SAf) and a half-sister to four other stakes winners including triple graded winner Secret of Victoria (SAf) (Goldkeeper), the dam of a pair of Grade 1 winners. Snaith spent R1.4-million on another well-pedigreed filly later in the session when snapping up Maine Chance Farms's Silvano daughter of champion 2- and 3-year-old filly Princess Victoria (SAf) (Victory Moon) (lot 112).
Lot 67 wasn't the only daughter of Captain Al to find favour on Wednesday, with Mario Ferreira going to R2-million for Boland Stud's lot 58, who is out of a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Captain America (SAf) (Captain Al {SAf}). That transaction occurred shortly after Shadwell Australasia had spent R2.6-million for lot 55, a colt by Gimmethegreenlight (Aus) from Mauritzfontein Stud.
The session finished with an aggregate of R43,305,000 for 122 sold and an average of R354,959. Full comparative statistics will be published upon the conclusion of the sale in Saturday's TDN.
