Sircat Sally Looms Large in Senorita

Joe Turner's speedy Sircat Sally (Surf Cat) has been flawless in all five of her trips to the post over both sprint and route distances, as well as dirt and turf so far, and the $100,000 one mile GIII Senorita S. on the Santa Anita grass Saturday looks like more of the same. After breaking her maiden over the Del Mar dirt in November, the Jerry Hollendorfer trainee romped by 12 lengths in the Cal-bred Soviet Problem S. at Los Alamitos Dec. 17. The 4-5 morning line pick added the California Cup Oaks in her sophomore bow Jan. 28 and, trying open company for the first time, saluted in the China Doll S.–Slam Dunk Racing's Beau Recall (Ire) (Sir Prancelot {Ire}) ran second–Mar. 11. The waters got deeper for the frontrunner, but she manhandled the field in the 1 1/8-mile GIII Providencia S. Apr. 8. Sircat Sally, carrying four more pounds than her rivals, appears to be the lone speed signed on, which will only work to her advantage.

Second choice in the wagering is 3-1 fancy and 'TDN Rising Star' Pacific Wind (Curlin) for Sharon Alesia, Ciaglia Racing LLC, Peter Brant and Dominic Savides. A winner at first asking by 4 1/2 lengths over course and distance Mar. 4, the chestnut has accumulated a solid worktab throughout the month of April locally for Peter Eurton and enters on the back of a five-panel breeze in 1:00 2/5 (4/46) Apr. 28.

Fellow first out winner Helen Hillary (Harlan's Holiday) eked out a nose victory after beginning at the tail of the field for Curtis and Priscilla Tamkin going nine furlongs on the local grass Mar. 25. Trained by Phil D'Amato, the bay will need to play her cards just right and hope for a stiff pace to cause the upset.
