Stiff Penalties In Lil Caesar Case

Richard Callander | Racing And Sports

Richard Callander and Liam Prior have been disqualified for six months by Racing NSW Stewards over the sale of Lil Caesar (Aus) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) to Hong Kong. Media personality and managing part-owner of the horse, Callander, was fined A$10,000 on top of his ban as the 'orchestrator' of the decision to withhold part of the sales proceeds. Both men were found guilty of keeping a commission from the sale of the horse unbeknownst to the other syndicate members. Jockey Glynn Schofield who acted as 'broker' in the deal, but who is not permitted from purchasing or selling bloodstock due to his status as a licensed jockey, was fined A$20,000, the amount he received for his part in the process. Lil Caesar was sold for A$200,000 but the owners were told the amount was A$140,000 with syndicate manager Callander and Prior splitting the balance of the proceeds as commission. Lil Caesar has since been renamed Lucky Year (Aus) In Hong Kong where he has won four times and earned over A$700,000 in prizemoney.
