The four-day Inglis Great Southern Sale drew to a close on Wednesday with a racing stock session that returned figures that were up on last year. With the number offered up almost 30 lots from 12 months ago, 155 were sold–at a buyback rate of 4%–for A$2,597,600 (121 were sold for A$871,700 last year at a buyback rate of 10%). The average climbed 132.6% to A$16,759, while the median jumped 66.7% to A$5,000.

Cumulatively, the sale saw 668 broodmares, weanlings and horses-in-training sell for A$13,250,000, well up on the 603 sold for A$8,526,100 a year ago. The cumulative buyback rate of 15% was down one point from last year, while the average was up 40.3% to A$19,835 and the median was up 80% to A$9,000.

“I think it is safe to say that this sale truly came of age in 2016,” said Simon Vivian, Inglis's Victorian Bloodstock Manager. “Every session recorded big increases in aggregate and to see the gross receipts jump from A$8.5 million to A$13.2 million in the last 12 months is so pleasing.”

He added, “The support we have received from our vendors has been rewarded with outstanding competition from buyers, leading to a most successful and enjoyable sale.”

The dearest lot on the final day of trade was the 3-year-old filly Mihalic (Aus) (Hard Spun) (lot 905), who was hammered down to Tristarc Bloodstock for A$310,000 as the last lot in the supplementary catalogue. The chestnut won Flemington's Listed Maribyrnong Trial S. on debut as a juvenile and was stakes- placed again this year, and is from the immediate family of group winners Sertorius (Aus) (Galileo {Ire}) and Clifton Red (Aus) (Sebring {Aus}). Mihalic's yearling half-brother by Reward For Effort (Aus) was bought by the China Horse Club for A$380,000 at the Inglis Premier Sale this year.

Another well-related 3-year-old filly that proved popular on Wednesday was Elite Rock (Aus) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) (lot 839), a daughter of G3 Doomben Roses S. winner Awesome Planet (Aus) (Giant's Causeway) and a full-sister to Awesome Rock (Aus), who was first past the post in this year's G1 Australian Cup but demoted to second in the stewards' room. The bay was picked up by AG Williams Bloodstock/Gold Front from Western Australia for A$220,000.

Racing stock offered by Contract Racing were well sought after on Wednesday, with 17 lots realizing A$640,500. Two of those were bought by Belmont Bloodstock: Crystal Wand (Aus) (Stratum {Aus}) (lot 742), a close relation to G1 Golden Slipper winner Crystal Lily (Aus) (Stratum {Aus}), for A$135,000; and Iamhere (Aus) (I Am Invincible {Aus}) (lot 735), a winning granddaughter of the five-time Group 1 winner Triscay (Aus) (Marscay {Aus}) for A$110,000.
