Set Square (Aus) (Reset {Aus}), the winner of the 2014 G1 Crown Oaks, has been sent for testing after connections were displeased with her action upon return from a spell, according to Racing.com. The 4-year-old filly had been sent to the paddock after a disappointing spring campaign–where she failed to find the winner's enclosure in five starts, culminating in a fifth in the G1 Mackinnon S. Oct. 31–and trainer Ciaron Maher said he now thinks she may have an underlying issue.
“Her action just wasn't quite 100% the other morning, so I'm just waiting on the results of [the tests],” Maher told Racing.com on RSN. “If it's all fine she'll press on but if not, we'll just make an assessment on the back of that.”
Even with the possibility of Set Square on the sidelines, Maher has another Oaks winner to look forward to during the Australian autumn. Last year's Crown Oaks winner Jameka (Aus) (Myboycharlie {Ire}) has been off since that Nov. 5 career high–which came on the back of a win in the G2 The Vase S.–and Maher said she has returned from a spell in good order.
“She's still retained quite a bit of her fitness from last campaign; she seems very relaxed in her work,” the trainer told RSN.”[She's] still very clean winded, [so] we'll just tick along with her. She seems really quite relaxed like she really wants to stay now. Damien [Oliver] rode her trackwork on Tuesday, [and he] seemed to think she's really looking for that extra trip now.”
Jameka's key autumn targets will be the G1 Australian Guineas at Flemington in March and the G1 Australian Derby at The Championships in April.
