Tycoon Colt Tops Inglis Opener

Lot 85 | Inglis

A colt by Written Tycoon (Aus) (Iglesia {Aus}) consigned by Woodside Park Stud topped the opening day of the 2016 Inglis Great Southern Sale when selling for A$170,000 to the partnership of Ampulla Lodge and Ascot Farm. The colt, lot 85 highlighted a solid day of trade that saw most KPI's increase all round from 2015. 152 weanlings changed hands at an average of A$31,378 giving an aggregate of A$4,769,500 and a median of A$18,000, all up on last year. The clearance rate dipped two points to 82%. The sale toper was one of eight lots to sell for A$100,000 or more throughout the day. Ampulla Lodge made a A$500,000 pinhook profit with the top lot from last year's Great Southern Sale, a colt by Exceed And Excel (Aus), and the farm's Steve and Ceri Jostlear were delighted to secure what they thought was the best colt in this year's sale. “He has good bone, a good walk and a great head and eye. It may be a line that gets used a lot, but we definitely thought he was the colt of the sale,” said Ceri Jostlear. By the sire of G1 Golden Slipper winner Capitalist (Aus) the colt is the eleventh foal from the Danehill mare Peppie (Aus), who has already produced Group 2 winner Sea Battle (Aus) (Quest For Fame {GB}) and his Hong Kong Group 3 placed own-brother Full Of Joy (Aus).

Eight lots sold for A$100,000 or more and three of these were offered by Tyreel Stud. Top of the trio was lot 108 a colt by Pierro (Aus) (Lonhro {Aus}) snapped up by Paul Willetts for A$160,000. Willetts had previously signed for the second highest Tyreel offering when winning the battle for lot 63 another colt by Pierro (Aus), this one for A$140,000. The colt hails from a predominantly Aga Khan family that includes high class performers such as Mouramara (Ire) (Kahyasi {GB}) and Mourayan (Ire) (Alhaarth {Ire}). The third six figure Tyreel weanling was lot 84, a colt by All Too Hard (Aus) (Casino Prince {Aus}) purchased by Paul Guy of Heritage Bloodstock for A$120,000. “We noted the growth of the market at this sale last year so purposely targeted four of our weanlings towards the sale this year, and have been rewarded so far with all three making at least double their service fees,” said Linda Monds of Tyreel Stud. “They have been sold to top judges Paul Willetts and Paul Guy, which is also encouraging,” added Monds.

The progeny of first season sires also came under strong competition. New Zealand's Lyndhurst Farm went to A$130,000 for lot 163 a colt by Dundeel (NZ) (High Chaparral {Ire}) offered by Two Bays Farm, while A$120,000 was required for Tony Clift to purchase lot 158, a colt by Akeed Mofeed (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) from Video Star that was offered by Swettenham Stud.
Day Two of the auction starts at 10:00am Monday local time when the remaining weanlings will be offered; Platinum (lots 206 to 290), Platinum Supplementary (lots 788 to 794), General (lots 291 to 405) and General Supplementary (lots 795 to 798).
