A pair of expensive purchases by U.S. interests out of the 2014 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale ran with distinction in pattern events contested minutes apart Saturday afternoon in Sydney and in Melbourne.
Stonestreet Stables' Kangarilla Joy (Aus) (Lonhro {Aus}), purchased by agent John Moynihan at the Easter sale for A$840,000, was sent off the 9-4 second choice in the G2 Liberty Light Fingers S. going 1200 meters at Royal Randwick and came with a rails rally in the final furlong beneath Hugh Bowman, only to be grabbed on the wire by 8-1 chance Perignon (Aus) (Snitzel {Aus}), herself an A$350,000 graduate of the 2014 Magic Millions Gold Coast sale. Kangarilla Joy, the most expensive filly ever by her sire to sell at public auction, entered the Light Fingers with three wins from four starts, including a soft victory in a BM 78 handicap over 1100 meters at Randwick Jan. 26. A Charge Forward (Aus) half-sister to Kangarilla Joy is catalogued as hip 401 to this year's Easter sale.
Cana (Aus) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), acquired by Spendthrift Farm for A$650,000, gave an excellent account of herself in the G3 Kevin Hayes S. at Caulfield, staying on nicely to finish third, 1 1/2 lengths behind reigning G1 New Zealand 1000 Guineas victrix Risque (NZ) (Darci Brahma {NZ}) as an 11-2 gamble in the six-furlong affair. Cana is a half-sister to a colt by G1 Golden Slipper S. hero Pierro (Aus) (Lonhro {Aus}) who is being offered as hip 57 onĀ opening day of this year's Easter sale Apr. 5.
