Vega Magic Stakes Everest Claims

Vega Magic | Darren Tindale

Vega Magic could be bound for the A$10-million The Everest on Oct. 14 after recording a second Group 1 win in Caulfield's Memsie S. on Saturday. The progressive 5-year-old gelding could take up The Everest slot held by Lindsay Park and The Star Entertainment Group, but co-trainer David Hayes said his team would wait until stablemate Redkirk Warrior (Aus) (Notnowcato {GB}) runs in the G2 Bobby Lewis Quality in two weeks to make a final decision.

“There's A$10 million up there so he would be a logical one for the [G1 Sir] Rupert Clarke [S. on Oct. 1] or The Everest and I'm thinking The Everest,” Hayes told Racenet.com.au. “It's more to do with [owner] Wally Daly and what they want to do and what deal can be struck. There are a lot of people very keen on him if the owners on our side are prepared to do it. He'd be a lovely fresh horse up there; he's got six weeks to it and he would come out with horns on I think.”

Vega Magic, previously based in Western Australia, won or placed in his first nine starts before finishing ninth in his stakes debut in the G3 Prince of Wales S. at Ascot last October. He bounced back with a win two weeks later over the same course in the G3 Heineken-Colonel Reeves S., and was seventh when making his Group 1 debut in the Winterbottom S. Vega Magic made just one start in the autumn and he made it count when taking the G1 Darley Goodwood S. over 1200 metres at Morphettville. He was second up on Saturday, coming off a win in the Listed Regal Roller S. at Caulfield on Aug. 19.

Sent to the lead from the break on Saturday, Vega Magic led from a hustled Jon Snow (NZ) (Iffraaj {GB}), with Black Heart Bart tracking in fourth. Jon Snow failed to fire at the top of the lane as Vega Magic kicked clear and Black Heart Bart continued to battle, and at the line Vega Magic was a very comfortable winner over that seasoned Group 1 rival, with Japanese expat Tosen Stardom making progress up the fence to be third.

Pedigree Notes…

Vega Magic is the lone stakes winner under his first three dams, but class comes through further back on his page, his fourth dam being the producer of the G1 Golden Slipper winner Century Miss (Aus) (Century {Aus}). Vega Magic's dam, the two-time winner Admirable, was mated exclusively with former shuttler Lope de Vega after producing Vega Magic, yielding the winning 4-year-old filly Vega Dior (Aus), a 3-year-old filly that died and an unnamed 2-year-old colt.
